I picked this up from a Tom Davenport post quoting a pilot friend:

“Instruments and measures and analytics are great for flying airplanes, but occasionally I find it useful to look out the window.”

He is talking about the current subprime brouhaha and how quant models fell down but I think this can apply to just about anything…
